Yes, the light in a can worked! My girls now have water when they wake up. The main waterer unthaws later in the day so they can have water at all times now.
I got four eggs yesterday and the day before three eggs and a weird one. Someone laid a rubber egg that I think stuck to her foot and I found it under the roost broken open. Naturally I took it out and showed it to Steve before disposing of it.
Yesterday I also rearranged the bedding and raked all the straw back into the corner. I did clean up work in the yard where chickens make messes. I am planning in my head to make a bigger run for them and on paper. We will add a pen to the right of where they already are making an L-shape out of it. The side by the fence I want to go out at an angle then drop down. I also want another door in the new section that only open half of to toss scraps in and don't have to worry about the chickens getting out while I'm doing it.
I've been looking at lots of coops at BackYardChicken and want to put two long skinny raised beds in there under tha angled side and plant grass in them and put screening on the top. This way they can only eat what grows up but they will have it IN their coop and not the back yard. I'll still let them out but not as often as I have unless I can figure a way to keep them out of my flower beds. I spent the afternoon yesterday putting stuff back "IN" the flower beds that they have removed for me.
Maybe it is our weather, I see coops with lots of chickens hanging out in the coop. Mine go in to lay an egg, get a drink for now, and to go to bed. Other than that, they are outside in the run no matter what the weather is.
This addition won't happen until I remove my pond. I have this HUGE pond in the center of my yard. I have afte much deliberation, decided to take it out. It will free up a lot of yard space, I am tired of not seeing the fish, tired of spending the $$ on it. I am downsizing to a 6' stock tank that I have used for a pond previously and finding homes for the koi and only having gold fish. They are less destructive.
Enough rambling for the day!
