Whilst my Barred Rocks are in their molting stages and looking better all the time, my new ones are slowly starting to lay slowly but surely. My Black Australorp, Miss Daisy, has had nice red on her waddles and comb for weeks now and she finally laid her first egg yesterday and I think she regretted going in and scratching out the pine shavings. She kept going in and out and rearranging and after a couple of hours, finally laid me a nice dark brown egg. My Buffy, the Buff Orpington is still laying the small brown eggs. My friend, Sandy, says they will get bigger. I certainly hope so because they are much smaller than any other egg. I have one Barred Rock laying at the moment and instead of 1-2 eggs a day, we are now getting four for the last couple of days. Racer, my Speckled Sussex should lay any time now but her comb/waddles are still pale so maybe not. I guess time will tell.
We got very cold here last night and are supposed to be cold for about a week then will warm back up again. Low for last night was supposed to be 24. I put the heat lamps on in the greenhouse to come on at dusk and go off at dawn. We added another barrel of water yesterday to be a heat sink and closed the auto opening vents so the heat will now stay in the greenhouse and Steve did the last remaining thing. Empty the water from the motorhome so the pipes wouldn't freeze.
I went out last night and closed the coop door. There are gaps in the roof for ventilation and cracks all next to the windows but the doorway would be a very big breeze so it is shut. I'll go out and open it after the sun comes up. They will not be happy because they can usually go out as they want.
