Not a lot is going on here. The weather has been great during the day but still freezing at night. Our egg production is up to 5-6 a day. I had to buy eggs for the Christmas gathering this last week so I could make the deviled eggs. The family member that was supposed to make them canceled out on coming so I had to make them. That is when I got a surprise. I haven't looked at prices in a while. We always joke as we go by the eggs. Do we need eggs? No. They are almost $3.00 a dozen, I've been selling mine for $2.00 a dozen. That is now changing to $3, I will explain to all that I have to keep up with the times and if stores sell those old eggs for that much, I can too.
We did a modification in the coop this week. We had put in two roosts all the way across and we decided to cut the one over the nest box down. It now only goes half way across the inside. They had to walk through poop to get into the nest box and I didn't want that. The poop boards have been put on hold because of the holidays and cold. The next plan is to raise the other roost so it is as high up as the first so they don't all fight over space on the new shorter but higher roost bar.
I got a couple bales of straw from a friend and have been layering it inside the coop. I've been just shaking it so the poop goes down and adding a bit of new to the top. So far so good. Today I am going to rake out the run. I haven't done it in a very long time and then I'll add new straw. Such an exciting life!
I am glad I'm retired now because I can open up in the morning and greet them. I open the window up first and talk to them, then open the pop door, then unplug the water heater under the black tub of water. I need to fill it today, but they are happy. I gave them the turkey carcass from Christmas and they picked down to only bones.
