On Monday, Molly and I played tetherball outside as usual when we go that direction in the yard. Later I was going in and out the back door cooking on the grill when I realized she wasn't coming out with me as usual, so I tracked her down. She had a very long splinter wedged inbetween the pad of her feet and toes. I pulled it out and had to get tweezers for more. I was sure there was more but on Tuesday when I looked I saw nothing. Then Tuesday evening she was limping more so looked again. It was in the pad of her foot at the back, I missed it when I looked.
After the fourth vet call, my normal one made an appointment for the next day or walk in and pay $15 more since they would have to work me in, or Low Cost who wanted an extra $45 to walk in and wait, the third wasn't open yet, so I called the fourth where I take my goats and I love the vet that cares for my goats and they said come on down.
After looking at it, they said they would have to sedate her to take it out and quoted me $450, up to $500. Steve is going to kill me! Not really, but still.... I sent him a text, you're going to kill me. #2 text, "remember how much it cost for the c-section?"
Well, I gave a big shout out to Dr. Anderson and Manzanita Animal Hospital. He said the splinter almost went out the other side and he made a small incision there and flushed it all out. Her splinter is in her chart it was about 3/8" long and 1/16" wide. She is bandaged up, needs changed in 2-3 days, and she has antibiotics and pain pills which I don't think she really needs. She was groggy and slept on and off all afternoon.
She wanted to run after her ball yesterday but was told limited activity. I have her small section of yard closed off with lawn so she can't run like normal and that will have to do.
Oh, and the final bill? It was $300, which is much less than the estimate. My OLD vet would have charged me more than the quote, every time it would be more than the quote!
