Mixing the Flock

Yesterday when I let them all out so I could clean coops I took out the center partition and set everyone free.  They have been free together for about a month with looking at each other every day through the two pens.  I cleaned pens and coops, added fresh shavings to both and cleaned the water pans good and bleached them out.  I have water pans that are cat litter pans in addition to the two watering buckets with chicken water cups.  I have two Home Depot buckets: one in each section of the pen and each has two watering cups on them.  They sit in the shade at the back corners of the coops.  The watering system keeps them full and we have aluminum insulation bubble wrap around them.  The pans are for the summer so they have something to stand in and Diller, my gold laced Polish takes advantage of that and is always standing in it.
Back to mixing them.  I let them stay out all day and the young ones basically stayed away from the big ones.  Hazel is now the boss instead of Sylvie, I don't know when that happened, but it did.  She shows her authority over the young ones and runs at them, they squawk and run.  I have been keeping an eye on them.  I left the partition open and so far so good.  The young ones keep to themselves and try to not draw attention.  They can go under the red coop if they need to or inside.  The big girls think chick feed is the best and are being pigs.  I just read on that and it won't hurt them, so I don't need to worry.  The young ones can eat the layer now so that is fine, too.  So far no MORE blood has been drawn.
I guess the big change will be when we add on to the coop itself and they all have to share the same inside space.  I know the coop will hold 9 now but not enough space for 12.  I don't worry about the limits on size because they sleep inside, that's it, otherwise they live outside here.  Even in the dead cold winter the minute it gets light out they come outside.  We need to think about the addition within the next couple of months.  Probably when the weather cools off.
