I also found this somewhere but can't find the site again so here goes:
Homemade Powdered Laundry detergent
Ingredients:
1 Box of Super Washing Soda 3 lb. 7 oz.
1 Box of Borax 4 lb. 12 oz.
1 Box Pure Baking Soda 4 lb.
3 Bars Zote soap (Microwaved to make powder)
1 container of Oxy-Clean 1.3 lb
1 bottle Purex Crystals 28 oz.
I cut the Zote up and microwaved two pieces at a time about a minute at a time to see how it worked in a large disposable plastic container. I also put a paper towel under the soap, just me as I try to save the disposable container, go figure. I then let each set cool (I used my tub lid for this) and then broke apart into smaller pieces for the food processer. If the bar was still the gooey pink I put that back. The house does smell like the soap during this process and I did all 3 bars. I recommend doing it with the doors and windows open.
I then put the fluffy Zote in the food processer a bit at a time with some of the washing soda powder to break it up into fine pieces. This process is very dusty so beware and there is only so much you can do at a time so you have to empty and start again several times.
I then mixed it all up in a big tote a bit at a time as I added stuff in. I re-used the Purex Crystal bottle for storage, and I have a couple of plastic tubs also. I think I'll decorate the bigger tub so it can sit on the washer. The Purex Crystal bottle does have a measuring lid so you could use it to dispense out of if you would like.
All the reviews (as in people who have used it) say you can use this in all washers. HE or regular, it works well in both. I have an HE. The Purex Crystals do not replace softener but it did make the soap smell even better than it did. Recommended amount is 1-2 Tablespoons of laundry soap per load. Reviews also said they use the soap dispenser or they put it in the tub to begin with. I use Gain softener but I dilute it half and half with Vinegar. I also use Vinegar in my dishwasher to help with spotting instead of the rinse agents.
