My herd name is official, from both goat registries my herd name is Third Acre. I think it is awesome, now to make myself a sign.
I've been trying to keep everyone cool here since we are having extreme heat warnings here. I've been going out a couple times during the day and wetting the goats legs, I was wetting them down but was reading about summer pneumonia? Although I dont' think it would happen here since we are so dry. Not happy goats :) when I do the leg wetting. They are staying inside the shed during the day as I guess the shade is better in there. There is also a shade screen over a section and shade under the bushes along the fence. It has been so hot at night that they have been staying outside on the bench and not going to bed until about 10pm. When it was cool as soon as it got dark they were inside.
The chickens have a mister in one half of the run (and are shaded) and I sprayed water around the rest, there are holes all over where they have been digging in to keep cool. I have the coop door propped open since it has been so warm at night so you can't even see the chickens in the run because of the door. There is also a big rectangular cement pan full of water. My Polish, Diller, stands in the water to cool off. Smart chicken.
I went out and raked the goat pen and the chicken pen this morning before it got too hot, it was much needed. I also cleaned the poop boards in the coop. I try to do it at least once a week.
We had a small thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. I think it's funny, other places in the country run for cover when it rains, we stand outside and enjoy it. Literally, we continued doing what we were doing outside because it felt so good. The only bad part is the humidity after. We are dry here and when it rains it raises the humidity and it is miserable. Especially since we only have swamp coolers. Air is drawn through wet pads to cool us off, if there is humidity in the air? They do no good at all. We have ceiling fans in every room to circulate the air which makes it tolerable.
